A couple of weeks ago my daughter and I spent a weekend at the Humphries House B&B in Edgewood, TX. What a neat old house! The owner served us wonderful breakfasts both days we were there, but I especially liked this recipe.
6 eggs, beaten
1 cup orange juice
2/3 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
8 slices French bread (cut 1/2 inch)
1/2 cup melted butter
3/4 cup slivered almonds
1/2 cup powdered sugar
Combine beaten eggs with juice, milk, sugar, vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Mix well.
Arrange bread slices in a 13 inch x 9 inch baking dish. Pour egg mixture over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
Pour melted butter in a jellyroll pan, and arrange bread in a single layer in pan.
Sprinkle with grated orange zest, nutmeg, sugar, and almonds.
Bake at 400 degrees 25 to 30 minutes (or until bread is golden).
Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
Two slices per person is a large serving when accompanied with bacon and fresh fruit.
